If you happened to notice my recent lack of blogger activity, here's why: I'm Injured!!!
It's been a rough couple of weeks... Lack of running has left me feeling completely unfocused, unmotivated, depressed, and otherwise blah!
The good news is that I'm starting to feel better. After 8 days off (minus a 2.75 mile run/walk/disaster somewhere in the middle) I successfully was able to run 5 miles on Tuesday at recovery pace and then another 5 miles today at general aerobic pace. Just getting those few miles in has drastically improved my disposition.
So what exactly is my injury? Good question... Truth be told, I'm not exactly sure... I have a couple of theories, but all I really can say is that I have a gimp right leg... It might be a quad strain? I definitely feel some weakness in the quad, but I've found soreness in my groin, inner knee, and hip... also tightness in my hip flexor and ITB...
Not sure if the Plantar Fasciitis in my right foot caused me to modify my stride which led to my gimp leg conditions or if the gimp leg caused the PF or if they're even related at all...
All I really know is that when I ran, it hurt! Not sharp pain that I could pinpoint but just general tightness and discomfort in all things right leg.
For a while I ran through the discomfort... I found that if I could make it through 4-5 miles it would eventually loosen up and feel ok... I trained through the pain for 2 weeks, hoping it would improve... it only seemed to get worse... at a certain point I realized that my stride was changing since I was basically limping!!! So, I finally made the tough choice to stop training and let the damn thing heal...
I'm still not 100% but I'm definitely improving... not sure how this will effect the big picture of my marathon training... I'm hoping I can easy back into it over the next two weeks but I'm probably going to have to cut down a bit on the mileage and intensity... I'm just going to get back to the basics: Listening to my body, training within my limits, and let the cards fall where they may...Overall, I'm optimistic.

Oh no! So sorry to hear...hope the rest does the trick...take it easy!
ReplyDeleteI am glad you are feeling better. Hopefully resting made all the difference
ReplyDeleteOh no! Sorry about the gimp. SOunds like maybe you were compensating for the PF. Sending you speedy healing vibes.
ReplyDeleteInjuries blow. Sorry to hear that you're on the DL. The injury domino-effect is frustrating. I have a fairly pathetic story about a hamstring pull that became a quad pull that resulted in a TFCC injury in my wrist and put me in a cast and rehab for 6+ months. Moral of the story - rest and recover before it mushrooms even more. Looking forward to a return to your running and your comical posts.
ReplyDeleteGetting injures is never any fun. Take care of yourself and get better soon!
ReplyDeleteTraining within your limits??? Now that's just crazy talk.
ReplyDeleteHeal up. Plenty of time to get ready for Chicago. Although, if you were in a full body cast I would say the race is out...
ReplyDeleteNow, I'm good for a blog or two from the hospital bed, but how'd ya type it with those casts on?
ReplyDeleteDragon Naturally Speaking?
You're one hell of a smart runner.
Glad you didn't run to the doctor yet (did you?) because you'd probably be diagnosed with Rabies or something with all of those symptoms.
Keep listening to your body and if you need a pick-me-up, just think back to that Bulldog Dash 2K.
Oh, that blows. Injuries suck! I think you still got some time before Chicago though so if you can rest/heal up in a week or two...maybe things will be okay. Recover well, my friend!
ReplyDeleteSo sorry! Hope you're back full force soon.
ReplyDeleteGood thing to let go and let it heal. One week or so should not make you lose that much performance for the race. Hope whatever it is heals soon. Take care.
ReplyDeleteInjuries blow. Take it easy and hope it gets better fast!
ReplyDeleteRemove the leg! It's just weighing you down. Cheers!
ReplyDeleteGet thee to an ART specialist. I have the same general issues with my left leg, which has spread to basically the entire left side of my body getting all out-of-what...the ART doc pinpointed the source of all my misery (tight soaz muscle that then throws everything else off).
ReplyDeleteOh, no! I hope that you're fully recovered soon!
ReplyDeleteOuch, not fun man. Not fun at all. Hopefully the time off is going to make you good as new.
ReplyDeleteDude you and me both! Take it easy and this too shall pass!
ReplyDeleteI can so relate. I have been on the DL for 5 weeks and found out TODAY the reason is a stress fracture of the calcaneus (heel) bone. That means 4 more weeks of NO RUNNING. I have aqua jogged 15 times since my injury and need to dig real deep to find the motivation to keep "in shape". I have "run" 890 laps in the pool since June 23rd - it aint easy.
ReplyDeleteOh no! Definately take it easy and I hope your recover soon!
ReplyDeleteGetting injured sucks! You've already gotten a lot of great advice, including making sure that you get some good rest, checking out ART, and trying alternative forms of cardio (elliptical and aqua-jogging are both great).
ReplyDeleteOne other alternative to consider is making sure you are getting in some lower body strength work. Lower body strength deficiencies have a way of messing up your running; for example, weak glutes and hips can cause you to rely too much on your hamstrings when you run. And over time, that can totally mess up your running mechanics. You might want to make sure that some strength work is a part of your weekly routine.
Hope you get back out there soon!
Glad to hear you are on the mend at least. Hopefully a week off does the trick - you were cruisin' thru training and I expect nothing less until Chi town!
