A blog about running???

When I first started this blog I had just finished running the Chicago Marathon. I had just run 26.2 miles straight (no walking, hopping, skipping, jumping) although to be honest there was quite a bit of run-hobbling, grimacing, groaning, and grunting.

My thoughts at the time were: "What's next"... check the URL: http://beyond26point2.blogspot.com/

The idea at the time was that now that I had completed a marathon, the next step was to complete another one... except this time I want to do it fast... fast being a relative term of course, but in my case (as for so many others) I'm thinking Boston Qualifying...

And I'm not strictly sticking thinking marathon's either. I want to PR some 5ks, 10ks, 15ks, half-marathons. And on top of that I want to place in my age group. Heck I want to win my age group.... In fact, I'd like to win an entire race (btw anyone know about any obscure races?)

I mean check out my banner... This is supposed to be "the awe-inspiring musings of a midpack recreational runner during his meteoric rise to elite status and beyond!".

I mention all this because I haven't had much to say about running lately. This is because I've been struggling on and off with IBTS for the last 2 months. I've still been getting in some milage (maybe 10-15 a week) but it's been pretty pathetic milage (mostly running a mile or less then walking then running then walking... etc). Mostly I'm just getting frustrated... I really love to run now and I especially love long runs so all this stop and go on the treadmill is driving me crazy.

Fear not though... I realize this is just a shortterm roadblock in a long road of progress and that I'm going to eventually overcome it... just know that I'm looking forward to the days when I can start posting about the killer run I had, or the amusing antidote that happened to me while I was out on the road...

Until then, it's off to the gym for some more treadmill and crosstraining... Blahh!!!

Awesome Post man. I really don't see the big deal with Boston. But I have'nt ran my first marathon yet. I prefer to do one internationally PH Manila. That's my Boston. I hope your IBTS heals soon, and keep it up. At least you are putting out really good posts! Have a good one! ........Keep Running!

  4. what are you doing for your it band? just curious... i've never had troubles with mine yet (knock on wood) but i know it is not uncommon in a runner's world! maybe you can find some additional stretches/massages/treatments/alt medicine doctors to see from others out there w/ similar aches and pains?

hang in there - get yourself healed up properly so you can run again -- forever and uninjured! :)

  5. Lindsay...

Pretty much doing everything for the ITB band that I've been able to find from the internet, books, others advice etc... except for what I probably need to do to heal it which is to stop running on it completely...

-I've been doing multiple stretches that I've found on-line, and a couple of stretches I've made up myself.

-I've been using a foam roller several times a day (this really hurts while I'm doing it but feels amazing right after I'm done)

-also been hitting the Naproxen both before bed and before I exercise to deal with inflammation and of course icing several times a day

-Additionally I've been doing a lot of leg balancing exercises on a Bosu ball as well as squats, lunges, calf raises, and a bunch of core exercises (which I'm not sure will help the ITB directly, but I figure if the rest of my muscles are stronger that it will ultimately prevent additional injuries)...

  6. Thanks for your comment yesterday about my Sunday run. Yeah - sometimes we do just need to shut it down for a couple of weeks and let all the tweeks and niggles heal. But my concern is that I'm only in week 3 of an 18 week plan. If I'm having this level of physical difficulty at this point, then I need to rethink my next marathon.

When I look back at Sunday though, itwas more like mile 22 in a marathon. Everything was tired and fatigued. It really became more of a mental exercise to keep moving forward.

Best of luck with your IT band! I've been fortunate to not have any problems with mine, but I'm pretty religious about things like having the right shoes and then changing them often...
